For our Midsummer's Night Dream project we did a play to help bring Shakespeare to life. They play was used as a way to study while being involved in the real thing. It was a more involved way of learning. I was only a minor role but it still showed me how Shakespeare uses the rhythm in his wording, and the same generic characters in all of his plays. We were all to act and create our interpretation of the play as a class and perform it to an audience.
The connections I made to this play were monumental, one was to Shakespeare's other play Romeo and Juliet. Many of his characters had the same generic look at the world. Lysander and Romeo are very similar characters that are lost in love and find what they think is the best for them. For these two we did a compare and contrast on their lives and how they believe that love is everything on nothing to them. In many of Shakespeare's plays he uses the same characters but in different ways.
During this project there were many different problems. The largest one was creating the sets. Because we had a limit on supplies it was difficult to accomplish. When we finally got the sheets we had to paint them. We started with spray painting but when we ran out we had to switch to regular paint. This was hard to blend the two things together. Overall I believe we did the best we could.
What I learned about myself during the project is that you can be a leader and a learner. Many of times in this production I believe I was a leader, sometimes I had to step back and listen to others. This helped me to be more open to suggestions and being able to work with others who had the same common goal.
Shakespeare is a monumental figure even in today's modern world. He created more than just plays he created a legacy. He was one of the first to put a comedy with a love story, but intertwined in there was a deeper meaning. He brought so much to the world of acting how could it be 400 years and people not want to keep learning about his many plays.
